What Is a DRP Shop and Why Your Insurer Wants You to Use One?

After an accident, most insurance companies don't waste time before pointing you toward a specific body shop. It feels like a helpful recommendation. In reality, it's a business arrangement that benefits your insurer far more than it benefits you.
Here's what's actually happening and what you can do about it:
What Is a Direct Repair Program?
A Direct Repair Program, or DRP, is a formal agreement between an insurance company and a collision repair shop. In exchange for a steady stream of referred customers, the shop agrees to operate under the insurer's pricing guidelines, repair timelines, and parts preferences.
DRP shops are not necessarily bad at what they do. The issue is who they are ultimately accountable to. When a shop's volume of business depends on staying in good standing with an insurer, the insurer's cost targets carry real weight in how repairs get written and approved. The customer becomes secondary to the relationship.
Insurers benefit from DRP arrangements in several ways
Parts pricing
Labor rate caps
Reduce likelihood of supplements from hidden damages
From an insurer's perspective, the DRP system is an efficient cost management tool.
How DRP Shops Differ From Independent Local Shops
The most important difference is accountability. A local, independent collision shop's business depends entirely on its reputation in the community, the quality of its work, and word of mouth from satisfied customers. That means the shop's incentive is aligned with yours.

The difference shows up in the following ways:
Repair scope: Independent shops write estimates based on what the vehicle actually needs. DRP shops write estimates within the boundaries the insurer has pre-approved. When those two things don't match, the DRP shop typically has less leverage and less motivation to fight for the difference on your behalf.
Parts selection: Insurers often default to aftermarket or recycled parts to reduce claim costs. An independent shop with no DRP obligation will advocate for OEM parts when your vehicle requires them and push back when an adjuster tries to substitute.
Customer communication. DRP shops process high volumes of vehicles and are optimized for speed. Independent shops usually provide a better customer service especially if they're one of the only shops in town.
Supplements. When additional damage is found once a vehicle is disassembled, a supplement gets filed to cover the difference. DRP shops exist in a system that discourages supplements because it disrupts the insurer's cost model. Independent shops file them when the vehicle needs it, without that internal pressure working against the customer.
You Have the Legal Right to Choose Your Own Shop in Texas
Texas law gives you the right to choose any licensed collision repair facility after an accident, regardless of what your insurance company recommends. Your insurer cannot force you to use a DRP shop, cannot deny your claim because you chose an independent shop, and cannot refuse to work with a shop simply because it isn't in their network.
If your adjuster implies otherwise, they are wrong. If they put it in writing, they are potentially in violation of Texas insurance regulations.
What to Say If Your Insurer Pushes Back
Adjusters are trained to steer you toward preferred shops and they will often make the alternative sound inconvenient or risky. Here's how to handle the most common pushback:
"We recommend using one of our preferred shops.""Thank you. I've chosen to have my vehicle repaired at a shop of my choice. Please note that in my claim."
"Repairs may take longer at an outside shop.""I understand. I'm comfortable with the timeline as long as the repairs are done correctly."
"You may end up paying more out of pocket.""I'm requesting that repairs be covered according to my policy and the shop's documented estimate."
"We can't guarantee the work at a non-network shop.""Please confirm that in writing. My understanding is that you are required to work with any licensed repair facility."
"We can't work with that shop.""Please communicate directly with the repair shop regarding estimates and supplements."
Keep your responses short and factual. You are not required to justify your choice or negotiate your right to make it.
Work with a local shop
Choosing a local independent shop isn't just about avoiding the DRP system. It's about choosing a shop where someone actually answers for the quality of the repair.
At Paragon Auto and Collision, we work directly with 99% of major insurers, file supplements when damage warrants it, advocate for OEM parts when your vehicle requires them, and handle all adjuster communication on your behalf. You don't need to fight that battle alone.
