How Airbag Repair Works After a Collision

When your airbag system deploys, an entire chain of components fires, records, and in some cases permanently deactivates. Every single one of those components has to be addressed before your vehicle is safe to drive again.

Step 1: The Diagnostic Scan
The first thing a qualified collision shop does is connect a professional scan tool to the vehicle's OBD port and pull the SRS fault codes. This is not the same as a basic code reader you'd use for an engine light. SRS diagnostics require a shop-grade tool capable of reading airbag module data.
The scan tells the technician which airbags deployed, which sensors triggered, whether the pretensioners fired, and whether the airbag control module stored a crash event. That last point matters more than most people realize. The airbag control module records crash data similarly to an aircraft black box. Once it logs a deployment event, it is locked. It cannot be reset or reused in most vehicles. The module itself has to be replaced or sent out to a specialist for reprogramming.
Important: If a shop tells you they can "reset" your airbag module with a $50 tool and skip replacement, walk away. That is one of the most dangerous shortcuts in the industry.

Step 2: Replacing the Deployed Airbags
Airbags are single-use components. Once they deploy, they cannot be re-folded, repacked, or reused under any circumstances. Each deployed bag has to be removed and replaced with a new unit.
The replacement process varies by location.
Steering wheel airbags require removing the wheel assembly.
Passenger airbags are typically housed in the dashboard and require significant disassembly of the dash to access and replace properly.
Side curtain airbags run along the roof lining and require removing the headliner and A, B, or C pillars depending on which bags fired.
Each location has its own procedure, and doing it wrong creates improper fitment that will cause the bag to malfunction on the next deployment.
All replacement airbags should be OEM or OEM-equivalent parts. Aftermarket airbags from unverified suppliers are one of the most dangerous non-OEM substitutions in collision repair. The deployment timing, inflation rate, and pressure are calibrated to the vehicle. An improperly matched airbag can fail to deploy, deploy too aggressively, or deploy at the wrong angle.
Step 3: Seatbelt Pretensioner Replacement
This is the step that gets skipped most often at shops that are cutting corners, and it is one of the most important.
Seatbelt pretensioners use a small explosive charge to retract the belt and lock it tight at the moment of impact. Like airbags, they are single-use. Once they fire, they are done. A pretensioner that has already deployed will still hold the belt, but it will not retract or lock in a future collision. You would be buckled in, but unprotected.
Any pretensioner that fired in the original collision needs to be replaced. The shop identifies which ones triggered through the SRS scan and replaces them as part of the repair. Skipping this step leaves you with a seatbelt that gives you a false sense of security.
Step 4: Sensor Inspection and Replacement
Crash sensors are positioned throughout the vehicle, typically in the front bumper area, the door panels, the B pillars, and near the firewall. Their job is to detect the force and direction of an impact and send the signal to the airbag module to deploy.
The technician inspects each sensor for physical damage and tests them electrically to confirm they're reading correctly. Any sensor that is out of spec gets replaced.
On modern vehicles, sensors are also tied into the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS. If the collision affected a sensor that also supports automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, or blind spot monitoring, that system has to be recalibrated as part of the repair.
Step 5: Airbag Module Replacement or Reprogramming
As mentioned earlier, the airbag control module stores crash data and locks after a deployment event. In most vehicles, the module needs to be replaced with a new OEM unit that is then programmed to the vehicle's VIN.
Some shops offer module reprogramming as an alternative to full replacement, where a specialist clears the stored crash data and restores the module to a pre-deployment state. The reprogramming may have to be performed by the dealership only in some instances. If this is the case, our team will inform you before starting repairs.
Step 7: Final SRS Scan and Verification
Once all components have been replaced and reassembled, the technician performs a final SRS scan. This confirms that all fault codes have been cleared, no new faults are present, and the airbag warning light is off for the right reason, not because it was suppressed.
A qualified shop will show you this scan result or at minimum confirm it with you before returning the vehicle. If the airbag light is still on at pickup, the repair is not complete. Do not accept the vehicle until it is resolved.
