What to Do If Your Airbags Deploy After a Rear-End Accident

If you have been rear ended and need to figure out how to fix your vehicle's airbags, this article is written for you. In this article, we go over the safety procedures as well as the repair procedures.

Step 1: Do Not Keep Driving the Car Like Normal

When airbags go off, it could mean that the crash may have affected sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, wiring, bumper reinforcement, trunk floor structure, or frame alignment. Even if the rear damage looks small from the outside, the car may have hidden damage that needs to be inspected.

If the airbags deployed, the vehicle should be inspected by a reputable collision repair shop as soon as possible.

Step 2: File an Insurance Claim

If another driver caused the accident, their insurance may be responsible for the repairs. If you are using your own policy, your carrier may guide you through the claim process.

When opening the claim, make sure you explain that the airbags deployed. This matters because airbag repairs are not a simple cosmetic fix. They involve safety systems, diagnostics, and often multiple replacement parts.

A complete repair should address the whole safety system, not just the visible damage.

Step 3: Choose the Right Body Shop

A qualified body shop does much more than replace dented panels. When airbags deploy, the shop has to inspect, repair, and verify the vehicle’s Supplemental Restraint System, often called the SRS system. That includes the airbags, crash sensors, control module, seatbelt pretensioners, and related components.

Here are the steps body shops take to repair your airbags:

1. They Diagnose the Full Safety System

The shop performs a full scan to see which airbags deployed, whether the seatbelt pretensioners were triggered, and whether the airbag module stored crash data. This helps them understand exactly what needs to be repaired or replaced.

2. They Replace Damaged Parts

Airbags are single-use components, so deployed airbags usually need to be replaced. The shop may also replace sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, dashboard or trim pieces, and other damaged parts connected to the safety system.

3. They Test Everything Before You Get the Car Back

After repairs are completed, the shop scans the system again, clears any faults, and confirms the airbag warning light is off. This final step helps make sure the safety system is working properly before the vehicle is returned to the driver.

Why Airbag Repairs Should Not Be Rushed

If you go for the absolute cheapest option, there may be issues with your repair.

A low quality repair may involve:

  • Missing hidden damage

  • Failing to replace related safety parts

  • Improper installation

  • Incomplete diagnostics

  • Temporary tricks to hide warning lights

  • Poor-quality replacement parts

A proper repair takes more care because the body shop must verify both the visible damage and the underlying safety systems.
