What Is an Aftermarket Endorsement in Auto Insurance?

If you've put money into upgrading your vehicle, whether that's custom wheels, a widebody kit, a carbon fiber hood, or performance parts, you may be surprised to learn that your standard auto insurance policy likely does not cover any of it. A standard collision policy is written to restore your car to its original factory condition. Nothing more. An Aftermarket Endorsement allows you to claim your aftermarket parts on your insurance claim in case of an accident, and have it paid for by your insurance at a body shop.

In this article, we'll go over that.

What Is an Aftermarket Endorsement?

An aftermarket endorsement, sometimes called Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage, is an optional add-on to your existing auto insurance policy. It specifically covers non-factory modifications and upgrades installed on your vehicle after it left the manufacturer.

Without this endorsement, your insurer will only pay to put your car back to stock spec after a collision. For example: if you have a $3,000 carbon fiber bumper or $4,000 custom wheels, those parts simply do not exist in the eyes of your adjuster. You absorb that loss entirely.

With the endorsement in place, those upgrades are recognized as part of your vehicle's insured value, and the repair payout reflects their actual cost.

What Does It Typically Cover?

Coverage varies by carrier, but an aftermarket endorsement generally applies to:

  • Custom wheels and tires

  • Body kits, widebody panels, and aerodynamic components

  • Performance parts such as exhaust systems, cold air intakes, and suspension upgrades

  • Custom paint, wraps, and graphics

  • Aftermarket audio and technology installations

  • Interior modifications

It does not cover mechanical wear or parts that were already damaged before the accident. The endorsement only activates in a covered loss event, such as a collision or comprehensive claim.

How to Add an Aftermarket Endorsement to Your Policy

Adding this coverage is straightforward. Here's how to do it before an accident happens:

  1. Call your insurance provider and ask specifically for an Aftermarket Equipment Endorsement or Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage. Different carriers use different terminology, so using both phrases helps.

  2. Create a complete list of every aftermarket part on your vehicle. Include brand names, part numbers, and installation dates.

  3. Gather receipts, invoices, or purchase confirmations for each part. Insurers require proof of value before they will agree to cover a specific dollar amount.

  4. Photograph all installed modifications. Detailed, current photos of each upgrade protect you during the claims process.

  5. Confirm the coverage limit and increase it if necessary. Many policies default to a low cap, often between $1,000 and $5,000. If your modifications exceed that, request a higher limit that actually reflects what you've invested.

How to Use Your Aftermarket Endorsement at a Collision Shop

Having the endorsement is only half the equation. Knowing how to activate it at the shop is what ensures your parts actually get paid for.

When you bring your vehicle to Paragon Auto after an accident, here's what happens:

  • You notify us upfront about your aftermarket parts. Before we write the estimate, tell us every modification on the car and show us any documentation you have. This allows us to build an accurate scope of repairs that includes your upgrades, not just the factory components.

  • We document and photograph all damaged aftermarket components. This documentation becomes part of the formal claim file we submit to your insurer. Without it, adjusters often default to stock part pricing, which can dramatically reduce your payout.

  • We provide proper replacement pricing for specialty components. Aftermarket parts are not priced the same as OEM factory parts. We source and price them correctly so your estimate reflects actual market cost.

  • We communicate with your adjuster directly. If the initial estimate comes in low or excludes your modifications, we file a supplement on your behalf. Having the endorsement already on your policy means the insurer is contractually obligated to consider those parts in the repair calculation.
